GENERAL PIONEER PLAYHOUSE INFORMATION:

We put on three plays in ten weeks. We seek company members who are  easy-going yet serious about theatre…who can handle responsibility in a dedicated theatre environment, working as a creative team on a historic stage where stars like John Travolta, Jim Varney and Lee Majors earned their acting chops!

We have three categories of PERFORMERS at Pioneer Playhouse:

1. Professional Actors – (who have years of professional theatre experience).
You may submit video performance link by email

2. Acting Apprentice or Tech Apprentice – (usually of college or just post college age). Apprentices audition for us in person. The pay generally starts at $150 a week, plus room and board. These positions are highly competitive.

3. Intern – Note: Our intern program is currently on hold due to Covid complications.

This is an 8 to 10 week program that costs $900. The cost includes room, board, tuition and ‘hands on’ experience. Interns receive workshop training in acting, audition techniques and stagecraft. Plus interns audition for mainstage productions on even terms with paid apprentices. Each applicant must submit a written application and then schedule a phone interview. Applicants do not have to audition in person to be accepted. During Covid we suspended our intern program.

All members of our summer rep company live on our grounds in rustic cabins, trailers or barracks. We work together as a theater collective. Technical positions are drawn from our rep company. All members are encouraged to participate in classes and to MAKE THEATER MATTER by participating in our innovative outreach programs to the disadvantaged and disenfranchised such as our prison theater program that brings an arts experience to the incarcerated.

CHILDREN: Pioneer Playhouse hires local child actors on an “as needed” basis, from the central Kentucky region. If you have a child who is interested in acting, there are many summer opportunities at West T. Hill Community Theatre in Danville, The Ragged Edge in Harrodsburg and Rebecca Ryland’s Arts For Kids at the Community Center in Danville. We suggest you contact those worthy organizations for children’s theatre activities.

To be in Pioneer Playhouse’s “on call” file of local child actors, email or send us your child’s information, we will keep it on file and call, as needed.

DESCRIPTION OF EXPERIENCE
Pioneer Playhouse assembles a 25-person rep company each summer. Two weeks before each play, our entire rep company auditions for roles. If you are hired as a professional actor, you will probably be in every production, but you will need to audition to determine the part.

Everyone in the company will have the opportunity to work with multiple  directors, each of whom has their own directing style.
When not in rehearsal, everyone (intern, apprentice, actor) works backstage doing tech, during normal working hours. (9am – 3pm, with lunch break).

Everyone gets their own rustic “cabin”-style room, bathrooms are communal. Delicious home-cooked meals are served six days a week, two hot meals, breakfast is continental. (No meals served on Sundays). There is an air conditioned actors lounge with a kitchen and cable TV. Wireless internet is available. Laundry facilities are off property.

Pioneer Playhouse produces three plays (mainly comedies) in ten weeks. We seek company members who can handle responsibility in a dedicated theatre environment, working as part of a team, in any capacity. You will be “living, working, breathing” theatre for 10 to 12 weeks. It is a great way to beef up the resume, very quickly.

Professional Actor – experienced actors only

Must schedule and in-person interview around early March in one of two locations: a) at Pioneer Playhouse or b) whereever Pioneer Playhouse is holding its annual spring audition–posted at the top of this page.
